East 7 & 8 Plantroom Refurbishment – University Hospital Llandough

We were proud to secure, through competitive tender, the full refurbishment of the heating plantroom serving Wards East 7 and East 8 at University Hospital Llandough. This critical infrastructure project involved the complete replacement and modernisation of ageing equipment to improve reliability, energy efficiency, and long‑term operational performance.

Scope of Works

The existing 20‑year‑old boiler plant and primary pipework were removed in preparation for a full upgrade of the system. To ensure uninterrupted heating to the wards throughout the works, we designed and installed a temporary boiler house, enabling the hospital to remain fully operational during the refurbishment period.

The new installation consisted of:

  • High‑efficiency floor‑mounted Lochinvar boilers, selected for their reliability, performance, and lifecycle efficiency.
  • New primary pumps and a full replacement of the secondary pumping arrangement with state‑of‑the‑art Grundfos Magna3 circulators, offering improved controllability, lower energy consumption, and enhanced building management integration.
  • A new common flue system, rising externally above the main roof level, designed to meet current standards and ensure safe, effective dispersion.
  • Full replacement of distribution pipework using stainless steel press-fit systems, chosen for durability, speed of installation, and long‑term corrosion resistance.
  • A complete upgrade of the plantroom control system, including a new control panel interfaced with both the new boiler plant and the existing water heaters, providing improved monitoring and operational efficiency.

Quality Assurance & Industry Recognition

The installation underwent an independent assessment as part of the BESA 3‑year technical audit. The auditor praised the project, stating:

“The installation was carried out to a very high standard and appeared fully compliant with all relevant technical guidance, including manufacturers’ instructions, for continued BESA membership.”

This endorsement reflects our commitment to high‑quality engineering, compliance, and attention to detail across all stages of the project.
