Llanishen Fach School – Cardiff City Council

We were appointed to deliver the full mechanical design and build package for the new SEN facility at Llanishen Fach School in Cardiff. The project also included the complete refurbishment and replacement of the school’s main boilerhouse, all within the same programme period.

The new plantroom features a high‑efficiency wall‑mounted boiler system alongside a modern gas‑fired water heater providing domestic hot water to WC areas and classroom sinks. A standalone heating system was installed to serve the extension, incorporating Merriott LST radiators in every room to ensure safety and comfort.

A fully BB101‑compliant ventilation system was integrated within the ceiling void of the extension. Each classroom benefits from independent heat‑recovery ventilation units delivering fresh, tempered air, while dedicated extract systems serve all WC areas. The system was specifically engineered to meet the stringent acoustic requirements for SEN environments.

The WC provision includes both staff and pupil facilities, with bespoke trough sinks throughout. The extension also incorporates SEN‑specific changing rooms equipped with electrically operated high–low sinks and Closomat toilets to meet enhanced accessibility needs.

All new systems are managed through a comprehensive Siemens BMS package, housed within a newly installed control panel in the extension plantroom.

In the existing boilerhouse, we undertook a full plant upgrade. New Strebel frame‑mounted boilers were installed along with a plate heat exchanger to interface with the school’s existing heating services. High‑efficiency Grundfos Magna pumps were fitted to the secondary circuits, and the new common flue system was routed externally and supported on the existing chimney structure.
