St Cadocs Church, Caerleon – Net Zero Heating & Full Services Upgrade for a Historic Landmark

We delivered a transformative net zero carbon heating and services upgrade for the 12th century St Cadoc’s Church, a heritage asset located within the protected Roman fortress of Isca Augusta. All works were planned and executed with meticulous care to safeguard the church’s historic fabric, its archaeological significance, and its character as a living place of worship.

High Efficiency, Low Carbon Heating Solution

To future proof the church while maintaining its heritage value, we installed a high efficiency underfloor heating system covering:

  • 353m² on the Ground Floor, and
  • 70m² on the First Floor.

The solution incorporates a Slate and Firmax insulation buildup and an interlocking floor system ready for the new tiled finish. This design delivers excellent thermal performance without compromising the building’s structural integrity.

Discreet Air Source Heat Pump Energy Centre

Heating is supplied by two external Air Source Heat Pumps, positioned unobtrusively within the churchyard to avoid visual impact. From there, underground pipework feeds the internal plantroom, distributing energy efficiently to the underfloor heating manifolds. A smart monitoring and optimisation system ensures long term operational efficiency and reduced carbon output.

Enhancing Modern Use While Respecting Heritage

Alongside the heating upgrade, we installed:

  • New WC facilities, and
  • All mechanical services for the church’s new serving kitchen.

These improvements significantly enhance the church’s functionality for community events, services, and day to day use—while remaining fully sympathetic to its architectural character.
